Both pairs had to beat some pretty tough opposition in the 5 rounds it took them to reach the final, so we all knew it was going to be a belter. A small but elite crowd gathered at John O’Gaunt this weekend to watch Dorothy Blackburn and Di Green from Aspley Guise take on Brenda Gibbons and Louise Simons from The Bedford. With just 4 shots difference in handicap, the match was all square after 5 holes, with some pretty impressive play. On the par 3 6th, Dorothy teed off first and put the ball to about 12 feet. Not to be outdone, Louise then put hers to 11 feet. Hole halved in tap in pars. The 7th saw another excellent par for Brenda and Louise and they edged into the lead. Dorothy and Di won the 9th after The Bedford pair made their only error of the day, but they soon clawed back winning 10 and 11 to go 2 up. Nicely on the green for 2 on the 12th, it looked as though they may go 3 up, but Dorothy and Di were having none of it. Dorothy stiffed a chip and Di duly holed out to halve the hole. They then won the 13th and it was game on again.
Louise’s drive on 14 found the centre of the fairway, and Brenda put the ball on the green, leaving Louise an uphill putt. Di faced a wicked downhiller for the half, which slid agonisingly by very slowly and then just ran on and on and on…
With the bit between their teeth, the Bedford girls played the 15th beautifully to go dormie. Would there be one last twist in the tale? Dorothy and Di were getting a shot on 16, and played the hole very sensibly for a nett par. Brenda was blocked out behind a tree after two, but played an excellent and equally sensible chip away from the pin to set up 2 putts for the match. A great match played in great spirit, and a worthy final. Well played all four of you.
Also thanks to John O’Gaunt Golf Club for allowing courtesy of the course at a very popular time, and also to match referee, Heddwen Molloy, who worked almost as hard as the players!
