Junior County Championship 2009
Katie Makes It 3 In A Row
It has only ever been done once before, 18 years ago, winning 3 consecutive Junior County Championship titles. Katie Burman from John O'Gaunt won the title in 2007 and in 2008, but her 2009 season has been interrupted by A-levels and glandular fever. The high winds at Dunstable Downs made the round even more energy sapping, but Katie battled through and held on for an excellent 77 to win by 3 shots from Megan Birdsey (Caddington), who became the Nett Champion. Sophie Hillier from John O'Gaunt took the Under 16 prize with a gross 92 to qualify alongside Katie, as the Under 18 qualifier and current title holder in the Champion of Champions event due to be held at Cotgrave Place Golf and Country Club, Nottinghamshire on Sunday 13th September.
Four new girls joined in their first County Competition - twins Abigail and Kirsty Kennedy from Leighton Buzzard, Natalie Rendle from Aylesbury Vale and Jessica Hubbard from Mowsbury.
Last year's nett champion Fiona Cooper, Bedford & County, was runner up and Georgia Testa from Bedfordshire was 3rd. The net champion was Megan Birdsey from Caddington with a 73 and Abigail Kennedy from Leighton Buzzard hot on her trail with a nett 74 was second. Bethany Healey from the Bedford came in third with a net 75.
Thanks go to Holly Aitchison, a former BLCGA Junior who has recently turned professional, for generously contributing to the prizes.
Megan Birdsey was presented with a momento for her services to the County whilst being a Junior. The ex Junior County Captain is due to leave for a University golf scholarship in Kansas in August, joining Heather Mutton (Alabama) and Lizi Sweetnam in neighbouring Oklahoma.
